FINDING YOUR AUDIENCE: An Introduction to Marketing Your Photography with Mary Virginia Swanson

In this seminar, Mary Virginia Swanson discusses opportunities for photographers to market themselves and their work, and the path towards connecting with those audiences.

One of the most gratifying experiences for an artist is that of sharing their work with appreciative audiences. Whether you wish to share your work with your local and regional communities, or take on the challenge of marketing to a national market, photographers need to know the most effective path to that audience.

An overview of options for bringing your work to market as fine prints, editorial portfolios, licensing for design, corporate and advertising purposes and more will be presented, as well as the importance of your presenting a strong and consistent brand, having a strong presence in both print and on-line environments (including multimedia).

Known for her up-to-the- minute resources and constantly updated public presentations, Swanson will discuss effective research to determine those who will be receptive audiences, how to begin and maintain a dialogue with those individuals to whom you wish to introduce your work, including one-on-one meetings, via attending appropriate industry gatherings, portfolio reviews and other events. She will also discuss the importance of maintaining awareness on industry trends and market challenges, no matter what audience(s) you wish to reach.

This seminar is geared towards both to photographers who are beginning to promote their work, or those who are considering broadening their marketing to include new audiences for their photographs.

BIOGRAPHY

Mary Virginia Swanson makes it her goal to help photographers find the strengths in their work and identify appreciative audiences in today’s marketplace. Swanson has a diverse professional background, having coordinated educational, publication and exhibition programs for a wide range of institutions and businesses in our field, and is considered an expert in the area of marketing and licensing fine art. Swanson currently works individually with photographers as a marketing consultant and is a sought-after Portfolio Reviewer at events such as Review Santa Fe, FotoFest and PhotoLucida. Her workshops and lectures on the subjects of industry awareness and marketing opportunities have proven to aid countless photographers in moving their careers to the next level.

Swanson contributes articles to many print and on-line publications, including PDN and PDNEDU, Digital Journalist, Nueva Luz, and teachingphoto.com, among others in the US and abroad. She serves on the advisory board of Blue Earth Alliance and the “All Roads” Photography Program at National Geographic Society.

Swanson maintains a popular blog about opportunities for photographers at www.marketingphotos.wordpress.com, and she is the author of her self-published title The Business of Photography: Principles and Practices which is available through her website.
