(c) Jock Sturges 2010
4-DAY WORKSHOP (three full days plus morning session on fourth day)
THE FINE ART NUDE
Jock Sturges has been at the top of his game for over 25 years, world renowned for his extraordinary nudes published in his many beautiful books. In this special workshop, Sturges will work intensely with his students, revealing his motivations and techniques. It will feature active picture-making, supplemented by morning presentations/demonstrations by Jock, also allowing time for group and individual picture critiques. Emphasis will be on the nude in the landscape (Joshua Tree National Monument) and in evocative settings offered by the Korakia. Sturges is widely regarded for his commitment to his work and his classes, attendees will find this workshop a game-changing experience.
The course will consist of an in-depth immersion in both the technical and psychological challenges inherent to making nude portraits. Most important will be a close examination of the concept of relationship in working with models with an emphasis on accepting as opposed to imposing “poses”. On the technical end, a rapid, intuitive use of the camera will be taught. Students can expect to be taking a large number of pictures to help them absorb and refine skills which are intended to liberate them from the sort of deliberate methodology that so often impedes spontaneity.
An important aspect of the class will be a careful review and critique of work done by each photographer prior to the workshop as well as during the workshop process. Students can bring work in any form but prints are the easiest and most useful for review.
Day One:
Sturges will present examples of his work, and review the works of his attendees. Time permitting, he will give a demonstration with one or more models at Korakia in the afternoon session.
Day Two:
Location Shooting at Korakia or Joshua Tree National Park in a specially approved area.
Day Three:
Morning session will be devoted to reviewing and critiquing attendee’s photography from day two. Photography will resume in the afternoon session at Korakia or elsewhere. Students will have a chance to incorporate the guidance given by Sturges in the morning session.
Day Four:
Review and critique of the previous day’s afternoon session.
Models will be provided each day, giving each participant ample time to make important photographs. The ratio of models to photographers is approximately 1:4.
Photographers working with digital cameras should bring their laptops and be conversant with their hardware and software in order to facilitate downloading and projecting their work for critiques in class. Digital projectors with standard VGA cables will be provided. If you require DVI connectors and / or adapters, please bring one to class. The A & I lab in Hollywood will process and proof films from this workshop at no charge. Click here for details.
