ANTONIN KRATOCHVIL: The Powerful Editorial Portrait

© Antonin Kratochvil 2009

4-DAY WORKSHOP (three full days plus morning session on fourth day)
THE EDITORIAL DOCUMENTARY PORTRAIT

Are you relying on predictable lighting and tried and true methods to make portraits in your work? If even a bit of this rings true, we offer you the Antonin Kratochvil Psychological Portrait Workshop. In this unique workshop, Kratochvil, one of the most published photographers in the world, will show how, even in the difficult art of portraiture, it is possible to work in an intensely personal, unique style of interpretation. His photographs of people, celebrities or common people, have made him world famous. It will not be a traditional workshop on portraiture because Kratochvil has never made a traditional portrait – therefore be ready to at least temporarily abandon much of your current thinking on the subject. Antonin’s images go beyond document, they speak of emotions and states of mind, both of the photographer and the person photographed.

Fuji Films will proved reasonable quantities of film to attendees in this workshop. The A & I lab in Hollywood will process and proof films from this workshop at no charge.

Monday, March 29 – Wednesday March 31. 9:00am – 4:00pm (plus Thursday 9:00am – 11:00am)
Price: $850

BIOGRAPHY

Antonin Kratochvil is a founder of the VII photo agency. As photojournalists go, Kratochvil has sunk his teeth into his fair share of upheaval and human catastrophes while going about his documentation of the time in which he lives. Kratochvil’s unique style of photography is the product of personal experience and intimate conditioning.

Over the years his fluid and unconventional work has been sought by many diverse publications. From shooting Mongolia’s street children for the Museum of Natural History to a portrait session with David Bowie for Detour, from covering the war in Iraq for Fortune Magazine to shooting Deborah Harry for a national advertising campaign for the American Civil Liberties Union, Kratochvil’s ability to see through and into his subjects and show an immutable truth has made his pictures not facsimiles but uncensored visions.

Kratochvil has been awarded dozens of the profession’s most prestigious awards, grants and honorable mentions dating back to 1975, including first place at the 2002 World Press Photo Awards in the categories of general news, nature and the environment and an important 2004 grant from the Aperture Foundation. In 2001 he co-founded the VII Agency.
