4-DAY WORKSHOP (three full days plus morning session on fourth day)
FINDING YOUR VOICE: PERSONAL STYLE
Iconic image maker Keith Carter returns to conduct his unique and profound personal-style workshop.
This rare Carter workshop will open a whole new way of thinking about your photography for you. Keith Carter has perfected a unique vision, honed over the last 25 years. Immediately recognizable, his work stands out from the crowd. How can your work do the same? It’s not just technique that makes the difference – it’s a point of view – yours. You’ll learn to identify aspects of your work to perfect, as well as what doesn’t work – learn to see photographs differently. There will be a model available to the workshop on shooting days.
Would you like to develop or refine your personal style, strengthen your original vision, and broaden the way you think about the art of photography? This workshop is to help serious amateurs and professionals achieve more passion in their work by clarifying the narrative, aesthetic, and emotional aspects of image making. In this lies the key- your vision can transcend the ordinary, move away from the typical and conventional. With an emphasis on simplicity and the use of natural light, we explore the use of metaphor, symbolism, and popular culture as participants photograph across all genres. Through practical demonstrations, field trips, individual portfolio reviews, and the review of work of historically significant as well as little-known photographers, we refine our views on producing work and balancing the various aspects of a busy life. In addition to darkroom technique, digital fine art, and expressive printmaking, we discuss how to develop projects and exhibitions, editing, and the ins and outs of the publishing world. Ultimately, we’ll build a foundation to take home and build upon, to put you on the path to a unique, stand-out vision of your own. Everyone is encouraged to bring a sense of humor, adventure, and purpose; wise-asses, hotdogs, and burnouts welcome!
Photographers working with digital cameras should bring their laptops and be conversant with their hardware and software in order to facilitate downloading and projecting their work for critiques in class. Digital projectors with standard VGA cables will be provided. If you require DVI connectors and / or adapters, please bring one to class.
Fuji Films will provide reasonable amounts of film for participants in this workshop. The A & I lab in Hollywood will process and proof films from this workshop at no charge. Click here for details.
