Our Fifth Year Workshop Program offers 18 intense, remarkable classes with world-renown working photographers and educators. Most are three full days plus a 4th day morning session and begin on March 29. You will spend three 1/2 days with your fellow students listening, learning, shooting and comparing notes. Your instructor will work with you, demonstrate his or her methods, explore his or her own work and your own. We also offer one-day workshops during the week, allowing you to choose from special lighting and portfolio organization and presentation classes in addition to your principal workshop.
Note: Included in your workshop fee are Model fees, transportation costs and a delicious Boxed-Lunch for each full day of your workshop.
Workshop attendees will receive a 25% discount from each full day of their daily registration fee when they register.
The fourth day morning session of these workshops is optional and free. This means you can attend this wrap-up session and / or sign up for Portfolio Reviews, Seminars or Tech Consultations on the fourth day. Friday we repeat important Seminars for those in the workshop program who could not attend these sessions earlier in the week.

4-DAY WORKSHOPS ( Unless noted otherwise, 3 Full Days Plus Morning Session on 4th day)
MASTER CLASS
THE JOEL MEYEROWITZ MASTER CLASS: The Search For Identity. The Joel Meyerowitz workshop will be divided into the two ways of seeing that are at the heart of most photographic activity; walking the streets anywhere in the world and being out in nature. You will spend four days shooting with Joel on the local streets and out in nearby wilderness. You will have an opportunity to better understand how instinct, on the street, plays a role in defining who you are, as a person and as an artist; the same is true of the way we experience ourselves in nature and why we feel compelled to make photographs about its mystery and magnitude. This is a FULL FOUR-DAY WORKSHOP. Click Here for Full Details.

DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS
VISUAL STORYTELLING IN THE DIGITAL AGE with ED KASHI
The digital age is giving documentary photographers and photojournalists extraordinary new ways to tell stories. With this new ability, you can also exercise a greater level of authorship with your work. This intensive three day workshop will allow you to share your work in an intimate session to learn more about how a visual storyteller with a mission works. Given the direction that editorial photography is moving, there has never been a greater need for the documentary photographer and photojournalist to be able to put a stamp on their work. This means establishing a mission and motivation to maintain a clear vision of what you will do with your work to create an impact. Ed Kashi will use as examples his many personal projects, including his seminal work on Aging in America and recent work on the Kurds in Iraq, India and the Niger Delta for National Geographic. He will show how you develop an idea, get funding, get access, determine your goals, and most importantly disseminate your work to create an impact on the subject, issue and hopefully society. We will look at photographs, multimedia and short films to consider the range of opportunities out there at the moment. Students will have a day of shooting and then review, plus a group critique of each student’s portfolio/essays during the workshop. FINE ART NUDE
THE FINE ART NUDE WITH JOCK STURGES.
In this special workshop, Jock Sturges will work intensely with his students, revealing his motivations and techniques. It will feature active picture-making, supplemented by morning presentations/demonstrations by Jock, also allowing time for group and individual picture critiques. Emphasis will be on the nude in the landscape (Joshua Tree National Monument) and in evocative settings offered by the Korakia. These locations have wonderful options for natural light: Shadows and sun, hard and soft, the glow of diffusion. Both formal and informal approaches will be demonstrated and employed: Tripod-mounted camera work versus loose, hand-held style. You will learn how to feel the light – understand the properties of light as it sculpts and shapes the female form. Models will be provided each day, giving each participant ample time to make important photographs. The ratio of models to photographers is approximately 1:4. Jock will be available throughout for consultation, either in informal group sessions or individually, as opportunity offers. Although the Nude is the classic subject that has challenged artists throughout history, it remains a blank canvas for each photographer to fill. The approach may be complex, or simple in the extreme, but either way, opportunities abound. PERSONAL STYLE
PERSONAL STYLE: FINDING YOUR VOICE with KEITH CARTER
Would you like to develop or refine your personal style, strengthen your original vision, and broaden the way you think about the art of photography? This workshop is to help serious amateurs and professionals achieve more passion in their work by clarifying the narrative, aesthetic, and emotional aspects of image making. In this lies the key- your vision can transcend the ordinary, move away from the typical and conventional. With an emphasis on simplicity and the use of natural light, we explore the use of metaphor, symbolism, and popular culture as participants photograph across all genres. Through practical demonstrations, field trips, individual portfolio reviews, and the review of work of historically significant as well as little-known photographers, we refine our views on producing work and balancing the various aspects of a busy life. In addition to darkroom technique, digital fine art, and expressive printmaking, we discuss how to develop projects and exhibitions, editing, and the ins and outs of the publishing world. Ultimately, we’ll build a foundation to take home and build upon, to put you on the path to a unique, stand-out vision of your own. Everyone is encouraged to bring a sense of humor, adventure, and purpose; burnouts welcome! Hybrids: THE CONVERGENCE FACTOR: What You Need to Know About Shooting Motion With the Canon 5D Mark II, 7D with VINCENT LAFORET
Vincent LaForet has been at the forefront of the convergence of stills and motion since the Canon 5-D Mark II first made its debut last year. The first part of the day will involve a basic introduction to HDDSL video (High-Definition Digital Single Lens Reflex); it’s advantages, challenges and basic film theory for photographers transitioning into motion. The group will be broken into two separate groups, each of whom will shoot the same theme and get hands-on experience with the hybrid camera systems as well as many accessories (made by such companies as Marshall Electonics, Redrock Mico, Micro-dolly and IDX). Each group will essentially shoot a short film. Everyone will have a chance to direct and operate the camera and fulfill the roles that are part of the average narrative production. This is what you’ll need to learn in order to create short film products for websites and client’s other promotional efforts. LaForet will then discuss post-production workflow- Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, converting footage and doing a basic edit of the film as well as a final section in grading the footage (color correction). This workshop is going to be an incredible introduction to this fascinating new opportunity. Click Here for Full Details.Thursday, April 1. 9:00am – 4:00pm
